These are the choices awaiting lower and working class poor when they get out of school. Not too jolly of a prospect......scrape, steal or die-not the thing middle or upper class kids think about when they turn eighteen. But there is an alterlative for these kids with seemingly little chance of advancement-it's the military .The armed forces becons, welcomes and even challenges the youth from across the tracks with promises of college money, travel and skills for higher paying jobs. What do they really get ? A chance to defend the country ? A way out of poverty ? Perhaps, but for some the way out is in a flag draped casket. Recruiters sit in offices waiting with brochures and rote monologues detailing the wonderful world of the army, navy, national guard or marines. "Here's a chance to belong to something really huge, be in a real 'family'.....get the recognition and purpose that has evaded you since your birth". Sounds good to me, it does. They do leave out some important facts, though. This all-voulenteer force that is now attempting to police the middel east and change certain countries into demoracies is stretched to the limit. Politicians know that instituting the draft would cost many votes so the armed forces are under-manned, under armored and basically abused by this government. The end result is a bunch of well-meaning kids trying to escape dead-end lives winding up being used to fight illicit wars and have the prospect of delayed and/or substandard medical care if they get disabled from active duty. Psychological help for veterans is in really short supply as well so an alarming number of young veterans wind up emotionally troubled or worse yet, suicidal. It's a cruel irony that awaits the young vet upon coming home after active duty. Being shot at or shooting at people, seeing fellow soldiers die forever changes these kids. They join up to find glory only to get used up and spat out by the very organization that promised them a brighter future.I wonder what the recruiter knows of the potential misery that awaits these unfortunate kids....the betrayal, not of their fellow soldiers but of the system that sends them out in the world to do the bidding of politicans who have never served in active combat and who will protect their own children from having the experience of war up close and personal. It is the greatest insult to humanity, this treatment of the poor as a commodity to be use like fuel to burn for the sake of some pointless and exploitive conflict that kills thousands of innocent people, uses innumerable resources, causes unimaginable pollution and destruction and benefits a handful of rediculously wealthy war-profiteer buisnesses. Recruiting is a dirty job and someone has to do it, but who is this person and what do they really know about the fruits of their labor ?<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-7881274803257172991?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

the smell of defeat, the taste of chicken

Viewing life in normal terms usually yeilds familiar thoughts. Turning things on their side or upside down is much more entertaining and less predictable, therefore much less boring. I like to start with popular catchphrases and deconstruct them so that they more accurately portray the human condition. I'll cite some examples: 'Live and don't learn" ...words not to live by but isn't it funny how a lot of the time it appears that we are experiencing things while gaining absolutely no enlightenment from them. " Don't get even, get mad" perhaps a less wise path but more natural in the face of human failings. " The name goes on before the quality goes in" I'm dating myself with this one.....<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-8015395191234294265?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

bad dream

Heroes have a bad habit of showing us how it is likely that at one point or another they will fail us. This weeks failure is Alexander Vinokourov-hero to zero overnight due to a positive blood transfusion result after an appearant heroic effort in the Tour de France time trial where he wone the stage despite many stitches in his knees and elbows from a bad crash earlier in the race. On the T.V Vinokourov had the look of a real hero riding his guts out inspite of the pain and handicap of his injuries. Vino was the odds on favorite to win the tour before his crash. Now, he and his team have been excused from the race and he has been dismissed from his team pending further tests. This was a respected rider in the sport of the highest profile-well liked by riders and fans alike. One thinks that if a man like this resorts to blood doping to win, what about the rest of the sport ? Maybe it's all a bad dream, we just can't seem to wake up.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-6804413758103400554?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

bad neighbor

Every neighborhood has a bad guy......someone who doesn't really act like there is anybody else that matters in this world, only himself. This is my next door neighbor. This guy has an illegal buisiness in his backyard-a cabinetry, contractor, builder...human termite kind of vortex. He hires all sorts of wonderful folks to work for him-runaway felons, guys with restraining orders, his own family members ( not much different, really) just the kind of people that might make one a little edgy being just six feet from your house. This guy moved into the neighborhood about five tears after I did and the drama hasn't let up. He had a bit of a drinking problem and he and his wife got into some really nasty fights. After about six years the wife left and took the kids. Ever since the house next door has been a sort of halfway-house for all sorts of losers, down and outers needing a source of shelter and work. The buisness involves the use of power tools, sometimes on weekends, sometimes late into the night. There is no garage so work proceeds right out in the open - no buffer from the noise or the hits of the '70's blaring out of the radio. I call this guy " Dollar Bill" as this is what some of his aquaintences call him-a guy always in the pursuit of a dollar. Don't get me wrong, I work , too. I guess I just think a little differently that Dollar Bill. My way of doing buisiness involves having a shop, a buisiness license, paying taxes, not creating a vortex of noise for my neighbors to endure. I have confronted Dollar Bill on a few occasions....some times he will talk about it, other times he is indignant and downright nasty. This aspect of my life has been going on for about fifteen years.Today's talk was most discouraging and I fear that the next step is to get the police involved. I wonder what retribution Dollar Bill has in mind for people who dare to impede him in his quest for the next dollar. I guess I'll find out soon enough.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-2760969122010228063?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

ok, ok

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_Zop0JSkGq6s/Rdh9fBU7eaI/AAAAAAAAAAM/op4ZKrBe-_s/s1600-h/Picture+707.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_Zop0JSkGq6s/Rdh9fBU7eaI/AAAAAAAAAAM/op4ZKrBe-_s/s320/Picture+707.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5032910555472165282" border="0" /></a><br />Yeah, so I was wrong about the election........glad, really. It's about time that some views from average working people began to permeate the halls of the federal government. For the last 6-odd years it's been rhetoric and ultimatums raining down upon the citizenry......talk of fear and resolve against a mostly ficticious enemy, while the real enemies go largely unchecked. Same old same old.....large corporate interests buy the politicans and are free ( not entirely, although the profit they make pretty much pays for the expenses incurred..) to rape and pillage the earth and all of it's inhabitants. The world leaders are mostly reptiles employed by vampires......a few very wealthy people unsatisfied with making 400-1000 times the average living wage-so unsatisfied with what they have that they have to steal what you and I have.....pensions,healthcare, property, freedom of speech, etc. It is <span style="font-style: italic;">they</span> who hate our freedom, not some poor people on the other side of the world getting the shit bombed out of them.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-5160024913984768376?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

prepare to be hoodwinked

Does anyone remember the 1918 world series? The Chicago white sox players threw the series for a promise of money from a big time New York gambler. After the series the players were put on trial and eight of them received a lifetime ban from professional baseball. The entire nation felt cheated, betrayed......hoodwinked by their heroes in the national pastime. The reason I bring this up is that the country is on the verge of a midterm election and the same type of betrayal looms in the background......the hoodwinking of the American public at large. Polls show the Democrats poised to regain control of the house and/or the senate after this election. Most of my friends are convinced that this is going to happen, a sure thing. My prediction is based on the current government's record of the last 6 years. The republicans have done some criminal things recent history and have slandered opponents with lies and character destructive campaign ads. Imagine politicans attacking the military record of say, John Mc Cain, a veteran and prisoner of war......it's amazing that any thinking person would give any credibilty to such nonsense but the result was Bush winning the primary . It wans't long after that when in Florida a scandeous rigging of the ballot count and wholesale elimination of black voters created a win for the republicans there. The same thing happened four years later in Ohio. This government went to war on a false premise and continues with the waste of human life and resources, all the while continuing to lie to the public about the cost of the bad decisions that led to and keep this war going. It seems to me that the republicans rigging this election is not only possible, it is higly likely. The american people at large do not seem to be capeable of standing up to this kind of unacceptable government and demanding a fair and unsullied election. There is a hope that most people have that the government is honest and has the common people's interests at heart. The platform of the republicans in '2000 was " compassionate conservatism" ....what we have now is a form of festering fascism, the rest of the world knows it and is fearful of it for good reason. A compassionate government doesn't abandon it's poor, it's under-educated,it's un-insured, it's working class or the environment. The claim of 'compassionate conservitism' was and is complete nonsense by this government and this next election will showcase just how little our votes and our voices-even our lives mean to this government. A nation that elects reptiles will most likely be consumed by them.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-116222592494313888?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

ralph my world

What can bring a man to violent madness and dispair in fifteen minutes or less? Plumbing....at least today that was the case. The bathroom faucet had been dripping for about a month so today I figured that it would be a good thing to take care of. Maybe it was good to fix the faucet in the larger sense but the experience was awful. First, this operation is at home and the tool selection here is grim.Of course I proceed anyway with totally fucked up and inadaquate tools, experience and patience... as if my positive spirit will carry me through this miserable task-trouble is I do not posess a positive spirit. The only spirits I posess of any kind are the ones in the liquor locker.Problem #1. I like to tighten nuts and bolts to thier limit. This is precisely how I installed the last faucet. I really had a bitch of a time loosening all of those fittings that I had gorilla-torqued on three years ago.problem#2. The faucet I had installed last time had no replaceable parts so I had to buy a new faucet. I went and bought the faucet at a big hardware store that was going to close early as it was Sunday. If I needed anything else to finish the job I would and did have to go elsewhere-twice actually. Three trips to the hardware store, a big chunk bashed out of the sink pedestal ( it's now 'antiqued' I would like to say....) and about 1 1/2 hours of knuckle-scraping wrenchwork and it's done. No leaks yet, anyhow. I hope that the next time I can afford to have someone else, let's say a plumber , perhaps do the job.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-115129536288573234?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

the chuck starts here

Along the roadside in rural Amador county there is a smattering of garbage, no doubt courtesy of the occasional passing car. As I rode my bike down E-16, a small country route also known as Mt. Aukum rd. I was saddened to see the legacy of fast-food america. Names appeared on the side of the road: Jamba juice, Mac Donalds, Starbucks.....Pepsi....etc. I started thinking about what a huge load of crap these mega-companies are saddling society with-then I caught myself; It isn't the fast food giants that are spreading this shit all over the roadsides of the american countyrside , it's their customers. People like myself who are up in arms about the proliferation of fast-food waste need to focus on the reality that these places wouldn't exist without the customers. There is an odd logic to the habit that these people have of throwing trash out of their cars....why shouldn't they? They are filling their bodies with garbage-it only makes sense that they would fill the environment with garbage as well to complete the package,so to speak. People such as myself who dislike having to view garbage on the road and consequently pick up after these slobs have to focus on the real problem-human ignorance at its root cause: television. T.V. is a worthy foe to enlightenment and the concept of dignity. Kind of sad that such a powerful tool is used this way but it is also something that is understandable when one looks at the major players who fill up the airwaves; Rupert Murdoch , the Republican party, the same megacorporations that produce the fast food and it's all too disposable packaging. It will take a lot of people to get this monster problem turned around. Be the first on your block to care.Don't be the last.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-114523425126581582?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

how do you dislike me now?

It is not easy getting old but it is a universal requirement, unless of course you die young-not all it's cracked up to be so I'm told. Joints ache more when your old, things don't get you out of the house much.....relaxing and letting the t.v. be your companion is easier than getting out to see some music, or even some friends for that matter. For these reasons I call the comfort of home the " pre-death-coffin". I guess that might sound pretty morbid and downright insulting to the thing we struggle the most to have....a roof over our heads. Sure, it is a real privalege to have a home and well worth the struggle to have it, at least for a lot of people. Great though it may be it is still a place where we can be ,not only to sleep and exist but also to exist outside of the world of interaction. Since we no longer live tribally and few people live in a communal setting we are growing further apart, even if we are next door or just down the street. I am here alone ( My wife is working tonight) so I fit right in.....having a night in. Do I feel the need to go out to see a band, see some friends or anything outside these walls? Maybe, but it is likely I will only see the images on my computer screen or on the t.v. . Acess to stuff via the media keeps us from acess to suff via our own energy. Not only do we get older and stiffer by not moving as much, we rely on our news media for information......information that they filter, warp and spit out at us in a form that isn't necessarily representative of relevant truth. It seems that opinions are more sellable than information.Besides, if you just get information then the person who gave it to you was impartial and didn't get the gratification of convincing you of something. Opinions are all about right and wrong and who wins or loses an argument. It seems to me that most of the "news" we see on t.v. is all about opinions and arguments rather than actual occurances . Maybe truth just isn't as compelling as opinion. Maybe it isn't even worth leaving the house for.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-114352682023054654?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

city of assholes

Earlier this week I went to visit my hometown, that lovely little hamlet called L.A. I left this seething constanly churning mass of humainty and internal combustion in Sept. 1977-it was my birthday present to myself. Periodiaclly I have ventured back every year or so to see if it is still as awful as when I left and by golly, it is. Thankfully I am only a visitor anymore, maxing out at a three nights stay. I say that L.A. is a city of assholes because of my countless driving experiences there as a resident and now, a visitor. The aggression and coldheartedness displayed by L.A. drivers is something of an example for the rest of the world........come to L.A. and be hated. I really doubt that any of the agression I encounter on L.A. roadways is heartfelt, it just comes off that way. I imagine that the people that clog the freeways are truly impartial when it comes to other cars that share the road-they distribute the aggression equally. The behavior of L.A. drivers seems to be a direct result of too many people in the same space but not <span style="font-style: italic;">sharing</span> the same space. It isn't about sharing at all....it's a moving battleground of egos and frustration. Drivers act out on each other, perhaps out of other frustrations that happened earlier. I find it a miracle that the city of L.A. hasen't imploded or eaten itself. All the same, I still have to make my pilgrimage now and then to see family and/or friends that have the ability to cope in this city that I left so long ago.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-113773193149112586?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

from the dead

Yes, its back. Swiggblog lives-kind of. November is the unnofficial month of death. If someone is weak or careless or both, chances are they will meet their end in november. Kennedy did,as did my mother and one of my friends. Maybe it's the onset of winter-maybe it is the cold that keeps some of us from making it to the new year. Right now I feel a little ill...not that ill but the thought arises that some time later in life( or sooner) I'll feel ill enough to wonder if I'll make it through november. A sniffle will turn into a cold,a cold will turn into pneumonia and before you know it you'll finally get that short tribute in the paper that you never got when you were still breathing. While it is assumed that the damage to oil rigs in the gulf are to blame for the rise in gasoline prices, other factors are getting lost in the shuffle. Factor #: not all of the country uses crude from the gulf-all the same the country as a whole is getting a big price increase. Also, it is doubtful that the profits of the large oil companies are being affected negatively.....to the contrary actually the profits are rising. Will some of these profits benfit the many thousands of starving dehydrated desparate people ? Maybe a tiny fraction.......in some cases maybe none. Disaster profiteering is akin to war profiteering.......both are unfortunate and disgusting reminders of how people can get when they are sufficiently greedy and totally removed from the world of the common folk. Desparate people on the other hand do desparate things such as looting. While some of these looters are just common criminals I imagine most are just hungry and have no other choice save starvation. What would you do in the same situation? And our government in its wisdom sends the national guard down to the flood zone....not when the disaster strikes but a few days later so that looters can be discouraged or shot. The looters bodies floating down the river along side the drowned victims of the hurricane , people in different situations but both equally dead. Now our president asks the private sector to pony up what the government has been slow to offer-assistance to the thousands of displaced flood victims. It is my hope that something can be gleaned from all these disturbing developements and that people will be more co-operative with each other and not elect detatched idealogs to be our leaders.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-112571747923735695?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

sidewalk derby

It ain't my week. At 7:30 a.m. Sunday one would think there would be few people on the street......at least that's what I thought. I got on my bicycle to go to the bakery all of four blocks away when one block from my house I turned onto the sidewalk and was met head-on full force by a Mexican guy on a costco 50 lb. full suspension mountain bike. He was pedaling head-down madly as he must have been late for work. He didn't even look up until we had collided and I yelled in pain as my hand got smashed between two handlbars meeting at 25 m.p.h. . My hand was bleeding badly and felt like it might have been broken. The other guy just got on his bike and was getting ready to leave when I told him in Spanish:" Next time, use your eyes" . I realized that he figured that we were both still alive and our bikes still rolled so what was the point on hanging around-after all,it wasn't an auto accident. I figured that this guy rode this route every morning and I strayed into his path.....this was his sidewalk and I was the intruder. I was really in pain and kind of pissed but the other guy must have hurt himself as well but made no mention of it......he had no time for that. He probably had a whole family to feed at $ 8.50 an hour where I was just concerned if I would be able to ride the next day. Neddless to say, I'll be taking a different route next time and leave this guy a wide open sidewalk to blast to work on.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-112463585935164411?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

as I live and breathe

Hooray, the rice stayed down. swiggblog is still in effect. that's right!<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-112446409174492008?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

ok ok

I stand corrected....I must really be thinking that I have answers that other people don't have-this is of course a misconception on my part except in rare, very specific cases-moslty dealing with my work....and I could stll be full of shit there. Anyway, I did get a glimpse of mortality today in my own kitchen. I had come home from work and was pretty hungry and in a huge hurry as I had a jazz show to go to. A friend of mine has a nephew in a jazz guitar quartet so I was trying to choke down any food I could before leaving the house. I looked into the refrigerator and saw some carrots. I picked out a carrot, peeled it and started eating it while preparing a salad. Within ten minutes something was feeling very wrong. It felt like I was choking but I was still able to breathe. I am normally a healthy person so this was an entirely new experience. I tried drinking some water but it felt like a baloon was blowing up in my chest. I had visions of dying right there and wondering what my wife would think when she returned from work the next day ( she is a flight attendant and gone for 2-3 days at a time). I realized that the carrot must have been the problem and started trying to force it out. I was surprised at how east it came up and that I didn't feel sick, I was just uncomfortable. I tried drinking more water but I had to purge that as well......as of 4 hours later I have yet to eat or drink anything. I have some rice on the stove.....maybe that will stay down. I know what food poisoning feels like and this isn't it at all. Anyway, if swiggblog suddenly ceases to have new entries you have my apologies but where I might be I doubt there are internet connections. From all who I have asked so far I have yet to meet a person who has read any of these books, although all had admitted to having been given a copy. Maybe nobody gives a rat's ass if their cheese was moved, or nobody cares who the richest man in babylon is-or was. It doesn't matter if both you and I are o.k. because that is most likely only partially true anyway....all of us are messed up in one way or another so that makes us all not o.k........but that in itself is o.k. , I guess. All of these supposed "life change" or self-help guides are written by people who are just as fucked up as we are , so reading them is an excersize in futility. If you want to improve your life, take some time off........put a box of self-help books out on the curb.....somebody will take them-but they won't read them.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-112433794369938283?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

world in harmony

as I drove my underpowered 4 cylinder japanese truck from the painter to work yesterday I noticed some of the largest s.u.v's in front of me . They were all in the left lane desparately trying to cross three busy lanes of traffic to get to the far right. I wondered to myself for a second:" what do these idiots all want with the right lane? It only goes to...........COSTCO !!. It was like a bolt of lightening......yes-all the world is in harmony. The massive single-occupant 8 mpg. black mariahs were just going about their appointed rounds: Lill the 50 gallon tank with $3.00 a gallon of the middle east's finest, then go to the place with the biggest shopping carts on the planet. It's all about consumption.......not just fuel but anything-anything that will wind up in the landfill, anything that can be reaped from third-world workers getting paltry wages doing jobs that were formerly the backbone of our own economy.,.....anything that can make our lives a little easier while putting people out of good paying jobs and fattening the wallets of people who already have an oversupply of funds. These drivers of the giant black s.u.v.'s were almost like the animals on a nature show, going about their buisiness without knowing the essential part they are playing in the grand scheme outlined by the narrator...in this case, swiggblog. We are all cogs in a great machine -we find our various roles depending on the extent of our realative blindness. The most blind are the most valued as they will burn the most fuel, buy much more than they need and vote for the criminal element that is at the helm of this great machine. It dawned upon me that in my little truck that I try to drive as little as possible, in my 1 bedroom house that uses as little energy as possible to save money.......a person such as I has a very minor role in the big machine, although unwittingly I make my contribution-mostly out of weakness or lack of imagination. one has to be unbelieveably strong to not feed the machine. I have known such people....they are not at the wheels of those big black s.u.v.'s,or even a small 4 cylinder truck. They are on foot or on a bike.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-112420448486053379?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

hip hop....no longer just for rabbits

yo,check it out G.... lifestyle-straight up skills.....like d.j.'ing,skateboarding,breakdancing and up here in northern california, carmelizing onions. We were about 5 miles out of town riding side by side with me about 3 inches out of the bike lane. A big club-cab american full-sized v-8 equipped truck honked angrily as it passed....I had made a major transgression...I had ventured too far into his road. I guess it is his road and the war in Iraq is his war. I figured that instead of a yellw-ribbon saying:"support our troops" a mobius strip decal with the words : "I keep driving my gashog ...... soldiers will never come back" should be on this guy's truck. Like I am making the road more dangerous for his 5,000 lbs. of detroit steel by straying onto the road 3". It is because of guys like this that we as a country are exporting war to the middle east. It is sickening and people ought to do something about it......I know this country is al about freedom and people equate mobility with freedom, mobility at 8 miles per gallon is not freedom, it is dependancy-a habit like a heroine habit. Do we really need it that bad that we are willing to throw away human decency and become a new facist state as a result? Are we going to be led into the downfall of our society because of the need to burn fuel faster than any other country? If this is the case than we can not expect the rest of the world to respect us or even consider us as friends. Keep driving and find out.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14488946-112382712165787321?l=swiggblog.blogspot.com'/></div>

aergh

every year one gets older...and every year the summer gets shorter. Of course, I actually like being at home so I get to hear the pitiful barking of neurotic dogs all day and many nights while the owners are out on the town, forgetting that they have a pet of any kind. These people are a pox on the earth and getting mad at the dog is an injustice.
